About the Artist

Sarah Maddern was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1980.
After graduating from the University of Western Australia in 2003 she decided to move to the United Kingdom in 2005 to travel and continue her art practise.
Based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire for the past four years she has been inspired by her immediate urban environment of the town centre where she lives and works from a studio space wedged between two busy pubs with her partner Greg and Yorkshire Terrier Gustav.
Whilst the subject matter is of the everyday or mundane, each piece is the culmination of processes including photography, oil painting, mixed media drawing, collage, craft and the collection of found objects. Inspirations reflect her diversity in personal passions- travel, fashion magazines, hiking, museum display and collecting snowglobes.
Her first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom entitled 'Strange Little Girl' was held at Hive Gallery, Elsecar in September 2008. It comprised of a collection of oil paintings of observations made by an outsider within the urban landscape of Northern England.
